Well, from my experience:
1&1: cheap, service = lalala, Hardware (FritzBox) = excellent.
BUT: All-IP/VoIP lines only now (problem using FAX) and if DSL doesn't work -> no telephone and DSL.
Telekom: not cheap, service = bit better than lalala, Hardware (Speedport) = OK, but not excellent.
BUT: seperate lines for telephone (old Festnetz ) and DSL. FAX works like it should, if DSL is dead you can still use the phone.
What do you need George?
FAX?
More phone numbers than 1 (ISDN)?
What DSL speed is available at your place?

If you already have a phone line, call the Telekom (0800-3301000 or online www.telekom.de) and order DSL (but first check what speed is available at your place and there rates).
It usually takes two weeks to provide DSL (no matter where you order it). AFAIK the Telekom offers now a Sofort-Starter-Paket, where you get an UMTS-USB-Stick to surf the net until they connect you with DSL.[/url]
Good luck m8!
BTW: Get Bad Company 2 too
